Gotta Have Rock and Roll announced plans to auction off over two dozen master tapes supposedly recorded by the late Thriller singer
The estate of the late Michael Jackson has successfully halted the sale of "extremely rare and unreleased" recordings by the iconic singer.
Last month, Gotta Have Rock and Roll announced plans to auction over two dozen master tapes, believed to have been recorded by Michael Jackson at The Hit Factory in New York in 1994. The tapes were expected to fetch up to $4,000 each.
However, lawyers representing the Jackson estate intervened, threatening legal action and asserting that the recordings were "unquestionably stolen."
Attorney Jonathan Steinsapir, on behalf of the estate, issued a letter demanding the auction company to cease all efforts to auction the tapes and return them immediately.
The letter also emphasized that neither Michael Jackson nor his record company, Sony Music Entertainment, had authorized the sale or distribution of the master tapes from the recording sessions at The Hit Factory.
Despite the initial legal intervention, the auction house indicated their refusal to comply with the estate's demands.
In response, attorney Alex Spiro informed the auction house's lawyer that they intended to seek a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction in New York Supreme Court.
The situation reflects the ongoing efforts of Michael Jackson's estate to protect his intellectual property and unreleased work, asserting that the recordings are rightfully the property of the Jackson Estate and were taken without authorization.
