The earthquake in China has resulted in a minimum of 110 fatalities, according to Xinhua.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake in northwest China overnight claimed at least eight lives

On December 19, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck Kangdiao village, Dahejia, Jishishan County, in northwest China's Gansu province. 

The earthquake resulted in a tragic loss of life, with at least 110 people reported dead and 96 others injured in Gansu province alone.

 The impact of the earthquake also extended to the neighboring province of Qinghai, where nine people lost their lives and 124 were injured in the city of Haidong.

The earthquake, described as strong and shallow, caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of houses, leading to a sense of urgency for rescue operations. 

In response to the disaster, rescue workers were mobilized to search for survivors in the affected areas. The state news agency Xinhua reported that people fled to the streets seeking safety as the earthquake caused significant panic and devastation.

The provincial earthquake relief headquarters and local authorities were actively engaged in coordinating rescue efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake.

 The situation called for immediate attention and resources to address the urgent humanitarian needs resulting from the disaster. 

The scale of the damage and loss of life underscored the severity of the earthquake's impact on the affected communities.


After an earthquake hit Dahejia, Jishishan County in northwest China's Gansu province on December 19, 2023, collapsed buildings and a damaged car were observed.

 The US Geological Survey recorded the quake as magnitude 5.9, striking near the border with Qinghai province. Xinhua reported it as a magnitude 6.2, causing disruptions to power and water supplies in some local villages. 

Videos on social media showed fallen ceilings and debris. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers at 11:59 pm local time, with the USGS revising the magnitude from 6.0. 

An emergency response was initiated, with rescue personnel dispatched to the area and provincial leaders en route, as reported by Xinhua.
